Nigeria’s Ministry of Transportation says it is commited to the 2008 deadline for the reduction of air accidents in Africa by half. The Minister, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, who spoke through the Permanent Secretary, Mrs. Ammuna Lawan-Ali, at the 14th Aviation & Allied Business Leadership Conference held recently in Johannesburg, South Africa, says the country supports the deadline which is in accordance with the Minsterial Resolution on safety and security reached in Sun City, South Africa, in 2005.
She cites Nigeria’s measures in this direction as the granting of autonomy to the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), on-going modernization of control tower facilities, rigorous manpower development and the Total Radar Coverage of Nigeria (TRACON) that would soon be completed.
Similarly, we are upgrading security equipment and we have embarked on rigorous training of our security personnel in order to further enhance safety and security in the country,” she states. Mrs. Alison-Madueke adds that Nigeria hosted the first Global Aviation Safety Roadmap (GASR) Workshop in Africa on behalf of Banujul Accord Group, working closely with ICAO, and has participated in the ICAO Voluntary Safety and Security Audit, respectively, in a bid to enhance safety and security
