The number of cities that Etihad Airways flies into in Africa from its Abu Dhabi base is expected to increase from four to six by March 2009. The airline says it plans to start operating flights into Lagos and Abuja both in Nigeria using Airbus A330-200 aircraft. The airline states that the aircraft is configured to carry 22 passengers in business class, 240 passengers in economy and has a cargo capacity of 14 tonnes.
This is a significant development for Etihad Airways, which is in a campaign to extend its global network. “The launch of the first flights between Abu Dhabi and Nigeria will be a proud achievement for Etihad Airways which will continue the impressive growth of the airline’s global flight network,” states Mr. James Hogan, Chief Executive Officer of Etihad Airways. The addition of the new flights is also expected to increase international trade between the UAE and Nigeria.
The airline operates flights between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg, Cairo, Casablanca and Khartoum as part of its route network in Africa.
