Aviation & Allied Business Leadership Conference: Dar es Salaam. Tanzania

The 17th Aviation & Allied Business Leadership Conference was held at the Hyatt Regency Dar es Salaam - The Kilimanjaro, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania from August 28 to 30, 2011, with the kind support of the Ministry of Transport United Republic of Tanzania. The Conference discussed various pertinent issues under the theme: 'Air Transport In Africa: Strengthening Leadership, Sustaining Growth.

The Leadership Conference was officially opened by His Excellency, Jakaya Mshiro Kikwete, President, United Republic of Tanzania.

The Conference had in attendance Hon. Frank Ramsden, Minister of Transport of Botswana; Hon. Erkki Nghimtina, Minister of Transport of Namibia; Mrs. Dzifa Attivor, Deputy Minister of Transport for Ghana; Hon. Simon Ogari, Minister of State for Transport of Kenya; Dr. Chebrot Stephen, State Minister of Transport, Uganda, Dr. Harold Demuren, DG, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, representing Princess Stella Oduah, Minister of Aviation, Federal Republic of Nigeria and Hon. Omari Nundu, Minister of Transport, United Republic of Tanzania.

Goodwill messages were delivered by the Assistant Secretary for Aviation & International Affairs of the US Department of Transport (DoT),  Ms. Susan Kurland, Assistant Administrator for Policy, International Affairs & Environment of the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Ms. Julie Oettinger;  the President of African Civil Aviation Commission (AFCAC), Mr. Ceubah Guelpina; the Secretary General of the African Airlines Association, AFRAA, Dr. Elijah Chingosho; and the Regional Vice President, Africa, International Air Transport Association (IATA), Mr. Mike Higgins.

The 17th Leadership Conference was attended by over 200 delegates. There were presentations by 21 eminent speakers and session chairmen on various topics grouped under Airlines, Airports & Infrastructure, Aviation Finance, Capacity Building, Safety & Security as well as a special session on the review of the Yamoussoukro Decision.

The 17th Aviation & Allied Business Leadership Conference treated delegates to a pre-conference tour of the exotic Island of Zanzibar. The Conference also featured the 2011 Aviation & Allied Business Awards Gala Dinner. Hon. Omari Nundu, Minister of Transport, United Republic of Tanzania was honoured for his contribution to the air transport industry in Africa with the Special Achievement Award. The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority and TAAG Angola Airlines were honoured with Corporate Achievement Awards for their outstanding improvements and contributions to the development of the air transport industry in Africa. The Conference ended with the cultural night where guests were treated to Tanzanian culinary and culture.
