Republic Of South Sudan
Becomes ICAO Member
The International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) says it has
inducted the Republic of South Sudan as its 191st Member State due
to the country's adherence to the Convention on International Civil
Aviation.
ICAO notes that South Sudan became
a Member State on 10 November 2011, 30 days after the country's
notification of adherence was received, on 11 October 2011, by the
Department of State of the United States, which serves as
Depositary of the Convention. ICAO observes that South Sudan's
membership in ICAO will facilitate plans currently underway by the
Organization's Technical Co-operation Bureau (TCB) to provide
technical assistance to the State.
ICAO discloses that an
infrastructure-based improvement programme to enhance the safety of
United Nations air operations in the country, in cooperation with
the UN Mission to South Sudan, is underway and a proposal is being
made to the Government of South Sudan for the development of a
roadmap for the civil aviation sector.
