Burkina Faso, Swaziland, Uganda,
Morocco, Cameroun, Nigeria and South Africa have been elected to
the 36-Member ICAO Council. Their election took place at the 37th
Session of the ICAO Assembly, in Montreal, Canada held October 28
to September 8, 2010. The Director General of the Nigerian Civil
Aviation Authority, Dr. Harold Demuren, also served as the
President of the 37th ICAO Assembly. The 36-member strong Council
is a permanent body elected by the ICAO assembly every three
years. The Council of ICAO is headed by the President,
assisted by the Secretary General and a team of experts on the
council's secretariat.

The 37th ICAO Assembly made resolutions on safety, security and
environment improvement strategies which would promote coordination
and cooperative action and guide efforts in various aviation
regions under the leadership of ICAO in the coming years. ICAO is a
specialised agency of the United Nations created in 1944 to promote
the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation
throughout the world. It sets standards and regulations necessary
for aviation safety, security, efficiency and regularity, as well
as for aviation environmental protection. The organisation serves
as a forum for co-operation in all fields of civil aviation among
its 190 Contracting States.
