African States Elected To ICAO Council

Burkina Faso, Swaziland, Uganda, Morocco, Cameroun, Nigeria and South Africa have been elected to the 36-Member ICAO Council. Their election took place at the 37th Session of the ICAO Assembly, in Montreal, Canada held October 28 to September 8, 2010. The Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, Dr. Harold Demuren, also served as the President of the 37th ICAO Assembly. The 36-member strong Council is a permanent body elected by the ICAO assembly every three years.  The Council of ICAO is headed by the President, assisted by the Secretary General and a team of experts on the council's secretariat.

The 37th ICAO Assembly made resolutions on safety, security and environment improvement strategies which would promote coordination and cooperative action and guide efforts in various aviation regions under the leadership of ICAO in the coming years. ICAO is a specialised agency of the United Nations created in 1944 to promote the safe and orderly development of international civil aviation throughout the world. It sets standards and regulations necessary for aviation safety, security, efficiency and regularity, as well as for aviation environmental protection. The organisation serves as a forum for co-operation in all fields of civil aviation among its 190 Contracting States.
